May 31st is observed as World No Tobacco Day. Although Tobacco use is a risk factor for several diseases, several continue to consume this recreational drug. In films, smoking is often considered as a ‘cool’ factor that adds to the stylish appeal of the actor. Indian films carry a disclaimer before every film, stating that ‘Smoking causes cancer. Smoking Kills’. Our Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam movie actors have successfully bid adieu to cigaretes. Here’s a look at the actors who have done so.

Rajinikanth

RajinikanthOn 12th December 2012, on his birthday Rajinikanth advised his fans to quit smoking and drinking. Prior to this Rajinikanth was hospitalized in Singapore for ill health. On his recovery, he told fans that the reasons for his heath problem were because of his heavy consumption of alcohol and smoking during his youth. The actor later declared that he has quit smoking.

Kamal Haasan

Kamal HaasanWhen Kamal Haasan’s mother advised him to never get into the habit of smoking, little did she know that he will begin to. At the age of 11, Kamal Haasan smoked his first cigarette after his mom warned him not to. He later confessed to having kicked the habit soon after. The actor also jokingly said that he quit the habit as he had to do several lip-lock scenes in films.

Mammootty

Mammootty”I have never him light up a cigarette in all these years” says Mammootty’s, make-up man. The dashing actor is said to have given up smoking seven years ago and hasn’t touched one ever since.

Mahesh Babu

Mahesh BabuA few years ago, Mahesh Babu was a chain smoker. However, it was only after his friend urged him to read the book by author Allen Carr on ways to quit smoking, did Mahesh Babu decide to kick the habit. Now, the actor doesn’t even smoke on screen as he doesn’t want to mislead his fans.

Rana Daggubati

Rana Daggubati began smoking for a film and got habituated to it for several years. When he began dubbing for his film Nenu Raja Nenu Mantiri, he had difficulty in dubbing effectively. After which he approached the doctor for a solution for a better voice, and the doctor recommended he quit smoking. Rana has quit the habit ever since.

Vivek Oberoi

Vivek OberoiThe Vivegam actor decided to quit smoking after visiting patients in a cancer hospital in Mumbai. Soon after that, he was signed as the brand ambassador for anti-smoking initiatives by the World Health Organization.

Vijay Deverakonda

Vijay DeverakondaWhen actor Vijay Deverakonda was approached for Arjun Reddy, he had never smoked. However, he began to smoke for certain scenes in the film. The actor is said to have quit the habit right after the shoot of the movie.

Jayasurya

JayasuryaActor Jayasurya, who used to smoke about 10 cigarettes a day quit smoking after it began affecting his health. He was introduced to smoking by his friends during his days as a mimicry artist. They claimed that it would help improve his voice, however, he quit as it did the exact opposite.
