Watch Savitri and Gemini Ganesan’s excellent comic timing

Director Nag Ashwin’s Mahanati starring Keerthy Suresh has grossed over 1.8 million at the box-office. Needless to say that the success of the film rested in the able hands of Nag Ashwin, Vyjayanthi Movies, the cast and undoubtedly Keerthy Suresh.

Based on late actress Savitri’s life, the film spoke about the legend’s rise and downfall in the film industry. It also touched upon the relationship that Savitri and Gemini Ganesan shared. In Mahanati/ Nadigaiyar Thilagam these roles were played by Keerthy Suresh and Dulquer Salmaan respectively. A then already married Gemini Ganesan went on to marry Savitri, this caused a furore among family and fans. After a few years of being married, Savitri and Gemini Ganesan had a tumultuous relationship.

Savitri and Gemini Ganesan’s on-screen chemistry was loved by all, the two went on to do several movies including Manam Pola Mangalyam (1953), Guna Sundari (1955), Maaman Magal (1955) and Poojaikku Vandha Malar (1965) among others.

The two excellent actors were also very good at performing surreal comedy, one such scene can be watched in the film Poojaikku Vandha Malar. Directed by Muktha Srinivasan and written by K. Balachander, the film revolved around friends-turned-enemies, (Suresh, played by Gemini Ganesan and Ravin played by R. Muthuraman).In the film Suresh falls in love with Chitra, not knowing that she is Ravi’s sister. In this scene from the film, Gemini Ganesan tricks Savitri into believing that he is unaware of her family status and that she is from a wealthy household. He requests her to stitch his shirt, unfamiliar with any household chores, she still obliges. What happens next is hilarious. Watch this scene here.
