Imaikka Nodigal Review

Director Ajay Gnanamuthu recently said in an interview that he decided to choose a female protagonist instead of a male, because the placement of this cast has already been done-to-death. His film Imaikkaa Nodigal does break this stereotype. It also gives an interesting plot by retaining the suspense in the end. However, what could’ve have been an intense cat-and-mouse is watered down by the lack of convincing story which is partially silly and lack logic. To top it up, there’s flash back one after the other, that moves like a whirlwind – round and round.

When we meet Anjali (Nayanthara) we immediately realize that she is an upbeat cop who stands first in a crime scene ordering her subordinates to execute tasks.  She tracks down clues evidently left by the psycho-killer. And by this we know that the serial killer is a smart guy. He doesn’t just slash people into pieces but is a techno expert who can crack mobile phones and personally text people informing his whereabouts. He even knows that he is battling it out with a bunch of unprepared police officers who let him go easily. How else would you explain the scene where police officials arrive at the scene after he has escaped. Or even the scene where he kidnaps a politicians son without anyone finding out! If the criminal can escape once, how hard would it be for him to do it twice? Also, in the age of messenger, Instagram stories and whatsapp, how hard would it be to send the picture of the criminal to the police officers? A child can solve a jigsaw puzzle easier than how the police solve crimes in this film.

As the film progresses in what is supposed to be an explosive interval break, you get a déjà-vu feeling. That’s because this exactly similar scene featured in the 2016 Bollywood film Teen. Apart from that, the film also reminds you of the Hollywood thriller The Bone Collector in which Angelina Jolie takes the lead to find the serial killer. Of course, this is less haunting or spine-chilling than those films.

Most thriller films have a staple to supply a couples to the film’s story which help the protagonist find clues. This film two features them in form of Raashi Khanna and Atharvaa who love track is baseless even if the artists add the ‘cute’ factor in them.

The film travels back and forth trying to give each character a flashback story which is not only needless but extremely lengthy as well. If this was not enough the film is also supported by junior/supporting artists who can’t perform in this intense thriller. What makes this film seem never-ending is the 2 hours 50-minute runtime. A crisper film would’ve made a lot of difference.

Among the performances, Nayanthara emotes a certain seriousness to her role that makes her suitable for it. It’s a welcome change in Kollywood to see directors pen scripts where the female lead is in charge. Be it Maya, Kolamaavu Kokila, directors have written scripts where the lead isn’t just another simple girl, she plays the hero, whose past/given situation transform her. Sadly, for an actress who is hailed as a superstar, it could do better if she adds a level of authenticity to the role. A tough officer wears wedges, heavy Khol-ed eyes, and grins at the villain on duty. If you are going to get down and do the majority of the heavy-lifting in the film, you might as well, look like you have done it. Directors should also insist she dubs in her own voice.

Anurag Kashyap delivers a menacing act as Rudhra. His very physical presence, body language, and effortless act confirms that this role is a cakewalk for him. It almost seems like he just walked into the film to play Rudhra. Atharvaa Murali’s performance, especially in the action sequence, is very good.

Hip Hop Tamizha’s music is terrific as moves along the hunt down. The BGM is also well done.

Imaikkaa Nodigal may mark itself as a suspense drama, but to get to stay at the edge of your seat, it could do a bit more than just shuttle between several stories that lack convinction.
