Maradona Movie Review

Maradona is directed by Vishnu Narayanan starring Tovino Thomas, Chemban Vinod Jose and Sharanya Nair in the lead roles. The music is by Sushin Syam, who is the keyboard player in the folk band The Down Troddence and has been in charge of the department in movies like Ezra, Great Gather and Villian.

The story revolves arounds the theme of anti hero becoming moral, is not new in the malayalam industry. Member of a quotation gang, Maradona is in a lot of trouble when he ticks off the wrong people and is forced into hideout. What happens when he meets a nurse and poses the rhetorical questions to himself about his lifestyle choice and how deals with the mistakes he made and the consequences he has to face makes up rest of the story.

The movie uses the age old past and present mixed narration, but doesn’t capture the emotions it intends to. But the focus is on Tovino, who surprises the audience with the diversity of the character he chooses. A remorseless goon who goes to any length to get what he wants, is the anti hero in this story. Let’s take a quick peek at the roles by Tovino; Gappi, Godha, Tharangam and Mayanadi shows how the roles may appear similar in tone in a general view, but each of them has a depth which enables him to live those roles, rather than to act.

The choreography by Deepak and the music makes the movie watchable, although the trailer was very undermining. Tito Wilson and Sharanya, her debut movie, has done a commendable job. After 7th day, this is a character of Tovino, we see in a negative shade. The director has given importance to the characters of the movie, rather than the plot. As I said earlier, the often told story, makes a great watch because how the actors make plot progress forward with ease. Apart from a bit dragging second half, Maradona becomes a entertainer for July.
