Pyaar Prema Kaadhal Review: A refreshing take on love

When was the last time you saw a Tamil movie where the girl doesn’t fall in love with the boy, slams those who shame her preferences when it comes to love and is ready to ask the guy out on a date? If you are still thinking, then the answer is obvious. Director Elan’s Pyaar Prema Kaadhal does break the regular cliches of how a girl and a guy should fall in love. In fact, the film portrays the guy as a naive character. Something that’s often written for women in films.

Just like the title which is in three languages, the film’s leads Sindhuja (Raiza) and Sree (Harish) are different when it comes to their opinions on love. While Sindhuja is a woman who doesn’t mind casual flings and lives an independent life with her father who has a progressive mindset. Sree is of a traditional mindset and is sentimental when it comes to the preference of his parents. How the two meet, fall for each other and take their relationship to the next level forms the rest of the story.

Seldom do films in Kollywood stay true to the genre of a rom-com. These films either dedicate songs thrashing the woman or moral police some on traditions. However, Pyaar Prema Kaadhal doesn’t contain itself within this template. There isn’t a dumb heroine chasing puppies, neither is there a hero who sings in a bar after his love failure.

The film explores the volatility of each other’s mind, their spontaneous decisions which leads to a clash of egos. One of the problems couples fight over is their lack of common ideologies. This is a major breaking point in majority relationships. The director explores the same with these two characters as well. While Sindhuja advocates the policy of loving oneself, Sree believes in pertaining to the rules of the society. These bits keep building throughout the second half of the film, however, it gets a little dragging due to the constant battle the couple have. After a point, the film slowly begins to drag, and losses its warm fizziness.

Harish and Raiza suit the characters well. Harish emotes quite well as the guy who is caught in his family’s expectations of him. The comic sequences in the office work well too. However, as much as Raiza suits the character, she doesn’t emote thoroughly. The makeup is flashy and loud, her look is overly done.

The film rushes to deliver the conventional climax, however, one would be in for a surprise with the film’s treatment. If you are in love, have a crush of even apprehensive about the concept, you can watch the film to find out all there is about Pyaar Prema and Kaadhal.
