Director Vignesh ShivN’s debut film Poda Podi may not have won his accolades but his second film, Naanum Rowdy Thaan directed all the attention towards him. His third film, Thaanaa Serndha Kootam manages to do just a mix of the two. Borrowing the core plot from director Neeraj Pandey’s hit film, Special 26, Thanaa Serndha Kootam.
The film is centered around Iniyan (Suriya) who aims at becoming a CBI officer. However he sees a roadblock ahead since he is the son of a clerk (Thambi Ramaiah) and getting his dream job would not be easy. His dream shattered by Uthaman (Suresh Menon, whose voice is dubbed by Gautham Menon) a corrupt officer who not only rejects him but also insults him at the interview. In order to take law in his own hands, he gathers a team and raids homes and offices of the corrupt, while pretending to be a CBI officer.
One may walk into the theatre assuming that it’s the exact remake of Special 26, however, Vignesh ShivN adds his touch to the screenplay. He adds a bit of comedy and playfulness to the sequences. This specially applies to the scenes where they raid Gandhi Appa’s (Anandaraj) house. Scenes like these make the film unique. However, minor deviations such as focusing too much on the flashback and a lengthy climax. The film further becomes dull due to lack of powerful antagonists. One is not sure who is posing a threat to Suriya – Kurinji (Karthik) or Uthaman. One wishes that all this could have been avoided.
