Thuppakki Munai Review: Vikram Prabhu stars in an underwhelming thriller

Director Dinesh Selvaraj‘s film Thuppakki Munai revolves around an interesting premise of an encounter specialist who is assigned an important case which eventually tests his moral principles.

With a plot like this, one would assume that the filmmaker takes us through the mind of the protagonist and how he turns into this ruthless cop, or, one may wish that the film take us into the minds of the antagonist and the reasoning behind their terrible intentions. But no, the film doesn’t want to take this route. It employs a painful time just showing us scenes of incidents where characters are lifeless, and villains are portrayed as blood-sniffing hyenas from the Lion King. But let’s just say those hyenas in the popular animated film offered comic relief at least.

With Thuppakki Munai, Tamil cinema decides to use rape as a point of conflict. It’s a relevant topic, but given that we don’t invest in these characters much, it isn’t engaging. The theme of the film often shifts from that of an emotional film to that of a thriller, and this works negatively. One of the best parts about the story is the character named Azad (played by Sha), and the Maoist angle behind his character. The film also features other characters and highlights some relationships which could’ve been vital to the story, but they it doesn’t take off. For instance the mother-son conflict, and how they don’t talk to each other for five years. There is so little shown and written. However, the biggest and silliest part of the film is the presence of a female lead, which isn’t written keeping the character in mind but it is simply mentioned in the story to include a star like Hansika. In her previous films, Hansika has played the bubbly, cute and enthusiastic girl and several criticized her choices. With Thuppakki Munai it now looks like those roles seem better compared to her role in this film. It’s a pity that the writing is so bad. I wish she had more to do in the film!

The only part which works in communicating the right emotions is young artist Abhirami’s screen presence and M. S. Bhaskar‘s unmatched performance. Vikram Prabhu plays the role of a fierce cop well but given the uneven writing, there is nothing much to do! Thuppaki Munai boats of stunning visuals too. The hero of Thuppakki Munai is the ‘bullet’; but I am not quite sure if it was aimed at the culprits or at the audience!
