Director Maha Venkatesh’s Telugu film C/O Kancharapalem which released in the year 2018 won appreciation from movie buffs and critics for its unconventional storytelling idea. The film revolved around four stories on love and longing which resonated with many. The film also brought out the distinct flavor of a small village near Vizag. Given all the accolades the film received, it came as a shocker when the film was rejected to complete at National awards. Soon after the news, one of the film’s producers Praveena Paruchuri, a US citizen of Telugu origin posted a tweet. Praveena, a cardiologist based in New York, tweeted ”Dear Visionary Leaders @ktrtrs @ncbn @narendramodi , #CareOfKancharapalem was made in India, by Indians, with Indians, released in India and appreciated by Indians, yet is not eligible for #nationalfilmawards. If this is the reason for ineligibility, Why @makeinindia ?? -Producer”
Soon after, K. T. Rama Rao, the chief minister of Telangana tweeted ”I appeal to Union I&B Minister Sri @arunjaitley Ji and MoS @Ra_THORe Ji to kindly review the below appeal, National awards are a matter of pride for all filmmakers. An award cannot be denied for a #MadeInIndia product because of archaic rules that are redundant in today’s India.”
Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore tweeted that it is sufficient if one producer is an Indian resident, he tweeted
Dear @KTRTRS ji, my off’r has spoken to @paruchurimd
These are NATIONAL FILM AWARDS & require producer or at least one co-producer to b Indian
My off’r has guided @Paruchurimd on the possibility of her application fr same
She can also apply fr Int competition section IFFI 2019 https://t.co/OQA8cK9hRD
