“When Anna was alive, the two who grew to guard the party were Kalaignar and MGR. It is only honourable that all three be revered in the same place. It is sad that the young ones who joined the party after MGR don’t honour this. Had MGR been alive and Kalaignar had passed away, he would have ensured that Anna’s thambi was near him.

Apart from politics, Karunanidhi has contributed immensely to cinema as well. He began his career as a screenwriter in the Tamil film industry with the film Rajakumari (1947). He then went on to write over 30 films. His last film as a writer was Ponnar Shankar (2011). He was famous for writing stories that had social and historical themes. One of his most popular films is Parasakthi (1952) which started Sivaji Ganesan in the lead. The film supported the Dravidian ideology and went on to become a box-office success. A leader who changed politics with his party DMK in Tamil Nadu and went on to become one of India’s greatest politicians.
Rest in peace, great leader.
