Adanga Maru Review: Jayam Ravi stars in a taut revenge drama

Early on in Adanga Maru, you begin to know that you need to keep your observation skills as good as the film’s lead hero, Subash. He is quick to plan things way-way-ahead of time, he is able to predict things much better than anyone else and he has hacking skills are like no other! Subash has characteristics of a superhero. But what makes him a mere mortal, is his lack of prediction to prepare himself for the worst in life. This is a quite a surprise, because for the audience the series of events Subash puts himself into, look like he will get into a lot of trouble!

Director Karthik Thangavel’s debut film, Adanga Maru is a taut thriller, that is sleek and moves at a swift pace. The film uses rape and injustice against women as a theme to allow the hero to take on the bad guys. The film also takes on the corrupt and how the government officials use their power to dominate the common man.

Subash (Jayam Ravi), a newly appointed sub-inspector and an IAS aspirant suspects something fishy in the suicide of a woman. He traces the evidence to find out that a gang of boys are responsible for her death. However, arresting them isn’t an easy job as they are the sons of powerful people, and it’s tougher to crack the case when police officials favor the powerful.

The film makes for an engaging watch because of the fast pace it moves in, and director Karthik’s ability to treat a familiar plot differently. The scene in which Subash decides to investigate the crime will have you hooked. However, if one has to consider the logic, then several questions will arise. For instance, the scene where the hero confronts the villains so easily isn’t convincing, neither are his methods to seek revenge on everyone. It’s a tad bit unintentionally funny when he has the answers to everything – including judging every move of his opponent. The thrill of the film is somewhere dissolved in this. After one point, the film drags too much, and this is shown the faces of the supporting artists as they don’t seem to emote much.

Jayam Ravi puts up a convincing act like the brave police officer. It’s a role we’ve already seen him in, and yet it’s always interesting to see how he takes it up in each film. The romantic angle between Jayam Ravi and Raashi don’t seem to work well, however, Jayam Ravi’s equation was quite a delight to watch; especially his scenes with adorable twins.
