Gowri Super Singer - Gowri 96

Director Prem‘s 96‘ has won appreciation from film buffs for its endearing story and the soulful songs. While singer Chinmayi‘s voice brought life to Trisha‘s character Jaanu, there is another singer who became the voice of the young version of Jaanu. Meet Gowri T. P, the young singer who sang and dubbed for Gowri Kishan in the film. At 16, Gowri has found fame with 96′. In an exclusive chat with DGZ Media, here’s what Gowri T. P has to say about herself.

Do you hail from a family of singers?

I am originally from Kerala, Trivandrum. Nobody in my family is a singer or has pursued musical interests. I am the first one in my family to pursue singing. I started learning music from the age of 4 and continued to learn it.

How did you manage to sing and speak Tamil so fluently in 96′?

(laughs)…well, I actually learnt Tamil during my time at Super Singer in 2017. My friends helped to learn the language very quickly. I only took me about two months. Picking up Tamil is very easy, as it is similar to Malayalam.

How did you get a chance to work in the film?

While singing at Super Singer, Chinamayi ma’am, mother heard my voice, and she liked it. She then referred me to director Prem sir. He then came to Trivandrum to audition me for the film, and within a day I was selected. I felt totally wonderful and very happy. I first worked in the Kannada film, but I consider 96′ to be my first film as it brought me recognition.

How was it working with director Prem and Music director Govindha Vasanth?

It was just amazing. I was asked to speak in Thanjavur dialect for Jaanu’s character in the film, and I had to perfect this dialect. Prem sir was very patient and kind with me throughout. He helped me so much. Govind anna too helped me a lot. When I sang the song ‘Thabangale’, director Prem and Govind anna were surprised as I wrapped it up in 15-20 minutes. They thought it would take two hours.

How have your friends and fans reacted to your fame?

My friends were taken by surprise when they heard me sing. They watched the movie twice and they loved it. The first time I watched the movie I was in tears. And I feel really good reading all the messages sent by fans. They say they love my voice.

What are your future plans?

I plan to become a musician someday.

We wish you the best, Gowri!
