Actor Ashok Selvan opens up about his film Jack, and his future projects
Actor Ashok Selvan made his debut as the young Ajith Kumar in the film Billa II which released in 2012. The handsome actor then went on to star as one of the supporting actors in the critically acclaimed film Soodhu Kavvum. Ashok’s first film as a lead actor was Pizza II, however, the film Thegidi is what made everyone take notice of him. The actor then went on to work in Sila Samayangalil, a Netflix release, which was directed by Priyadarshan, which won him accolades. Ashok Selvan’s film appearance was been quite limited and gives an impression that he’s quite selective about his choices. It was recently announced that he will be part of director Prasanth Pandiyaraj‘s (Bruce Lee fame) Jack. In an exclusive chat, here’s what Ashok Selvan has to say about the film, his take on the Tamil film industry and what he does when he is not shooting.
1. We don’t see you frequently in films, why is that?
There are a lot of reasons. I had a policy where I work only on one film at a time, however, I’ve changed it recently. In our industry, the work is such that nothing works as per schedule, that’s how the industry functions, we can’t blame anyone. So based on this, I’ve also decided to work on 2-3 films in one go. And moreover, there have been times where I liked the script but we didn’t get a producer for it, and there have been times when producers have narrated scripts but I didn’t like the story. Another thing is, I was a bit laid back. But I am gearing up to do a lot of films now. You will see me in a lot more in films.
2. What made you sign a film like Jack?
I really liked the story of Jack. I am an animal lover, so my first reaction to the story was I really want to do this! It isn’t a regular story. It’s about a soldier’s bond and affection with his military dog. There is a lot of scope for the film to stand out.
3. How have you prepared yourself for the role of a soldier in the film?
The shoot of the film will begin early next year. So I haven’t thought it out.
4. What is Ashok Selvan doing when he’s not working in films. What are your future projects?
I am not the type who lives, eats cinema. But I love my job. When I wasn’t working in films, I went on a biking trip to Ladak, I went back to playing professional cricket, I love playing with my nephew, so he kept me very busy. And I love traveling. As for my projects, I have signed a period film with director Priyadarshan, and I can’t reveal the details of the rest of the projects yet. There will be official announcements soon.
We wish the young actor, the very best for his future projects! May we see you in many more films.
