60 vayathu maaniram review

Every now and then there comes a movie which tugs at the strings of your heart and brings out the emotional side in you. Director Radha Mohan’s 60 Vayadhu Maaniram’s manages to do this well. Tracing the life of an Alzheimer’s patient, the story makes you question one’s equation with parents, what it is like to love and lose leaving you teary-eyes. With a story that shifts between two contrasting plots, the film gels these two interesting enough.

Producer Kalaipuli S. Dhanu, first announced the news of the film after it’s completion. This was probably done to retain the suspense element of the film. It works quite rightly so. When the trailer released it gave away only one half of the story, the other half is what completes the rest of the film.

While the film explores the tense father-son relationship, it also helps you travel through the characters where their relationship changes. In between this there is a suspense story and a potential love story.

A remake of the Kannada film Godhi Banna Sadharana Mykattu, written and directed by Hemanth M. Rao, the film oscillates and brings out multiple emotions including laughter at one time and a feeling of heavy heart another time. The strength of this film is the writing and the familiarity with certain scenes which hit hard. For example, everyone is trying to shuttle between being a good child to his/her parent, to stop and pause about one’s decision in the fast and busy life and to question our responsibities. But everything is not perfect here, there are a few scenes which make you say ‘no way this can never happen’.

What makes the film seem like drag is when it doesn’t give us answers when we expect it. The fight scenes too extend a bit.

Prakash Raj, who plays the role of the person diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. He creates moments which make you moist-eyed when he finds himself lost traveling around the city not having a clue that he is disconnected from the world. This happens in a similar scene when he begins to self realise his forgetfulness. He also makes you laugh a little when he asks for extra dosai after he lands himself with strangers. He’s terrific.

Vikram Prabhu and Indhuja suit the role perfectly well. Indhuja looks pretty and performs so well. Vikram Prabhu too delivers subtle act as the son searching for his father.

60 Vayadhu Maaniram is a film that’s heartfelt and soulful – a trademark by director Radha Mohan.
