Junga Movie Review

Director Gokul‘s Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara is one of the most celebrated comedies in Tamil cinema. The film’s dialogues are so popular that it is being used in everyday situations. The director’s latest comedy Junga, and his previous film have one thing in common: They star Vijay Sethupathi in the lead. Junga sets the tone for a quirky film, promising to be a full-length comedy, but like his previous, film doesn’t maintain consistent comedy.

The story of the film revolves around Junga, who is a bus conductor, who is forced to take up violence when his girlfriend is harassed by eve teasers. That’s when Junga’s mother, (Saranya Ponvannan) fears that Junga will follow his ancestors’ path. She then tells him that his father and grandfather were dons who murdered people and celebrated the victory with a party. She also tells that the family-owned theatre has also been lost. Junga then decides to get back the family wealth but faces many roadblocks in the process.

The film keeps your interest and attention because of Vijay Sethupathi’s interesting performance, and director Gokul’s writing The film doesn’t hesitate to take a dig at the cliches in Tamil cinema. The film also shows references to the current newsworthy events. For example, the Cauvery issue which is told in a comical manner. Scenes featuring Yogi Babu, and Vijay Sethupatji’s stint in Paris is a laugh riot! Although the film is slightly longer, because of the second half, the film rides high on comedy.
