Here’s how actors are using social media to help Kerala

Kerala is currently witnessing one of the worst natural calamities. It is grappling with the worst monsoon season of the century. Although rescue efforts are in full swing, several areas of the state are still difficult to reach, this is because of the submerged roads. Aluva is one of the worst-affected areas while popular tourist destination Munnar is cut-off because of the landslides. Owning to this natural disaster, movie actors are taking to their social media to urge their fans and followers to do their bit for Kerala.

Mollywood actor Tovino Thomas, offered a kind gesture by inviting those affected by the Kerala floods to his house. He also urged people not to misuse his gesture during the tragedy. He also told his Facebook followers about a location centre where one can drop and pick up things for the relief operations.

Mammootty has been updating his social media handles with information about the roads to avoid during the floods. He also posted helpline numbers. Mohanlal also took to his Twitter account to post information about a Navy chopper available for a rescue mission.

Actor Prithviraj‘s mother, former actress Mallika Sukumaran too had suffered due to the floods. A video which has surfaced online shows Mallika Sukumaran being reduced from her flooded house. Said to be an ancestral home in Thiruvananthapuram, the video shows that the house continues to be water-logged.

Actress Parvathy, Rima Kallingal have taken to their Instagram accounts to share constant updates about emergency helpline numbers, and information about people stranded. Actors Sunny Wayne, Parvatii Nair, Manju Warrier, Aashiq Abu, Neeraj Madhav, Amala Paul and others are doing their bit to help their followers by posting updates. Actress Ahaana Krishnan took to her Instagram to say that the roads from Kochi to Trivandrum are clear, and people can travel if they wish. Actor Joju George, whose house was flooded, told his followers that they have moved to a safer location.

Actor Siddharth, who lead the Chennai Micro team during the Chennai floods that hit the city in 2015, has decided to help Kerala as well. He took to his social media page to state that he has contributed 10 lakhs towards the relief work in Kerala. He has also started a campaign under the hashtag #KeralaDonationChallenge. He posted “I dare you. I beg of you! What do I have to do to make you read and share this? I did the #KeralaDonationChallenge It was awesome! Will you? Please? #KeralaFloods #SaveKerala @CMOKerala,”

Following his tweet, Bollywood actor Varun Dhawan thanked Siddharth for helping with the tweet.

Actress Jacqueline Fernandez took to her Instagram to urge people to contribute to the relief operations. She posted ”Your help will make a difference! Please contribute to rebuilding the lives of people affected by this disaster.”

Actors from Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam film industries have donated to the CM’s relief distress fund. Kamal Haasan, Allu Arjun and Mohanlal have donated 25 lakhs each. Mammootty and his son Dulquer Salmaan have contributed 25 lakhs. Brothers Suriya and Karthi have donated 15 lakhs. Dhanush and Vijay Sethupathi have contributed 15 and 25 lakhs respectively. The South Indian Artistes’ Association (SIAA) or Nadigar Sangam have donated 5 lakhs. The Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) have donated Rs 10 lakh.
