When was the last time you saw a man dressed in a saree..wait for it…on a hoarding for a clothing brand? Never? Well…this would not be the case anymore as actor Jayasurya has attempted to outshine every other actor with this move. Draped in a black saree which has designs of lipstick, sunglasses, a mirror and everything that belong in a vanity pouch, Jayasurya is seen posing the exact say way as his character in his upcoming film Njan Marykutty.

One has to laud Jayasuriya for his unconventional attitude: for refusing to bend to the rules of the patriarchy in this testosterone-filled world. Jayasurya could have endorsed any other brand that worked as a testament to his masculinity, and yet he chose to endorse a saree brand owned by his wife; even if it meant as a promotional strategy to create buzz surrounding his film. Director of Njan Marykutty, Ranjith Shankar took to his social media account to state ‘The only wife in history who featured her husband in a woman’s outfit for her own shop’s advertisement’. Jayasurya’s wife Saritha has previously designed costumes for her husband in films such as Punyalan Agarbathis, Fukri and Su Su Sudhi Valmeekam.

Unlike other films where men are often dressed as drag queens in films, Njan Marykutty revolves around a man who believes that he was meant to be a woman, and undergoes medical procedures to become a trans woman. The trailer of the film has crossed 1 million views on YouTube,

The music of the film has been composed by Anand Madhusoodanan, while Vishnu Narayanan is the cinematographer. This film marks director Ranjith Shankar and Jayasurya fifth collaboration. The two have previously worked in Punyalan Agarbattis, Su.. Su… Sudhi Vathmeekam, Pretham and Punyalan Private Limited.
