On its 20th Anniversary in Japan, Rajinikanth’s Muthu will have a grand release

20 years ago, Rajinikanth’s blockbuster film, Muthu released in Japan and won the interests of Japanese audiences. Released under the name ‘Muthu Odoru Maharaja‘ which translates to ‘The dancing Maharaja’. It was the first non-Hollywood film which was hailed as a blockbuster in Japan that year. Now, after 20-years, the film is set to have a re-release.

Kavithalayaa, the production house of the film issued a statement which read ”Muthu (1995) directed by K.S.Ravikumar and produced by Kavlthalayaa Productions. featuring Rajinikanth and Meena In lead roles was a blockbuster hit in India. The movie was subtitled In Japanese and released in Japan as Muthu Odoru Maharaja – Dancing Maharaja in 1998 The film received rave reviews and was released In 30+ screens across Japan Muthu Odoru Maharaja was the first non-Hollywood film to get a blockbuster release In Japan In that year. The memory of Muthu continues to be very strong fn Japan and It was hailed as the cultural ambassador between the two countries It may be recalled that our ex-Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh mentioned the movie as a cultural ambassador between India and JapanIn his address to the Japanese parliament Oct 2006.” The note also added that the film will be digitally restored and enhanced to 4k and 5.1 surround.

Rajinikanth even interacted with the team who are releasing the film in Japan.


Directed by K. S. Ravikumar, Muthu also starred Meena, Sarath Babu, Radha Ravi, Vadivelu and Jayabharathi among others. It won Rajinikanth the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor in 1995. Muthu is an adaptation of the 1994 Malayalam film Thenmavin Kombath which starred Mohanlal in the lead.

Rajinikanth is currently awaiting the release of Petta which will hit screens on Pongal 2019.
